The Role of Bolt Torque Uniformity in Preventing Micro-Leaks:-

A flange joint does not fail because of one weak bolt. It fails because of uneven load distribution.

When bolts are tightened inconsistently, the gasket or PTFE liner does not experience uniform compressive stress. Some areas are over-compressed. Others are under-compressed.

This imbalance creates localized stress zones.

Under-compressed regions can allow micro-gaps to form at the sealing surface. Over-compressed regions can accelerate creep or cold flow in PTFE components.

Both conditions increase the risk of micro-leaks over time, especially under thermal cycling or pressure fluctuation.

Uniform bolt torque ensures:
– Even gasket compression
– Stable sealing stress
– Reduced flange rotation
– Improved long-term preload retention

In PTFE-lined systems, this becomes even more critical because PTFE is viscoelastic and responds to sustained stress over time.

Best practice includes:
– Calibrated torque tools
– Cross-pattern tightening sequence
– Multi-stage torque application
– Verification after thermal stabilization

Sealing reliability is not just about gasket material. It is about controlled mechanical loading.
