How to Prevent Gasket Blowouts in High Temperature Applications:
Gasket failures at elevated temperatures rarely happen without warning. The root cause is almost always the same. Loss of bolt load as the system expands and relaxes.
In high temperature service, the gasket is only one part of the equation. Flange finish, bolt material, torque sequence, and thermal cycling all influence whether the joint stays sealed or suddenly vents.
Here is what actually works in the field.
Use the right flange surface:
A serrated finish creates controlled bite and prevents gasket creep under heat. Smooth flanges reduce friction and allow slippage.
Choose bolts that hold load at temperature:
Carbon steel bolts lose strength as temperature increases. High temperature alloys maintain clamping force and prevent joint relaxation.
Torque for the real operating condition:
A perfect cold torque is meaningless if the joint loses half its load at 350 degrees. Heat simulates load loss. Torque must be planned accordingly.
Control thermal cycles:
Rapid heat up and cool down create uneven expansion between steel and polymer based gaskets. This movement accelerates blowouts.
Check alignment and gasket compression:
A gasket that is over compressed or unevenly compressed will fail faster during thermal expansion. Proper seating pressure matters.
High temperature sealing is not guesswork. It is controlled force management. When the bolt load stays consistent, the gasket survives.
